The Tama River stretches from the foothills of Yamanashi Prefecture to the waters of Tokyo Bay in Ota Ward. The final section of the river, which marks the boundary between Ota and Kawasaki in Kanagawa Prefecture, is a tranquil path perfect for enjoying outdoor pursuits.

It isn’t always necessary to travel far to have an outdoor adventure, even in the world’s most populated metropolis. For Tokyo area fisherman a unique angling opportunity can be just a couple of train stops or a short bicycle ride away. Tokyo’s Tama River spring run of Far Eastern dace is one of those opportunities.

It runs close enough to Tama Hills Recreation area that it can be used as a path to run or bike there, though you’ll need to navigate some city streets to reach this destination.

The Tama River trail is one of the best ways to go on a long, uninterrupted run in Tokyo. Though not right in the central city, it is easily accessible along most of its length via subway. This trail is also popular with cyclists. One can run all the way from Fussa station line in the north, heading south toward the sea.

Experience nature! Tamagawa river The charm of river activities. The Tamagawa river is a first-class river crossing the Tokyo metropolis, and Yamanashi and Kanagawa Prefectures. It is hard to believe that such clear waters flowing down through mountains from their source are to be found in Tokyo.

“Carp, rainbow trout, cherry salmon, iwana (char), ugui (big-scaled redfin) and ayu all inhabit Tama River in sufficient numbers for limited commercial fishing to take place in upstream areas. After a bit of research I came across some fairly detailed information on Tama River Bass fishing (map here & Japanese site). The Inadadutsumi section of the Tama River was reported to be five stars out of five for Bass fishing and was about two hours from my front door to the river’s edge.

Tucked away in just off the main street in Thao Dien the experience of Tama River is real delight !! You will feel like you have been tele ported to a small village in Japan as the decor is very appropriate. The service is quick and friendly, the environment is comfy and the food is superb – super fresh, well presented and tasty.
